Quick blurb: Added forums on a trial basis to see how they pan out. Was thinking about having some for a while but didn’t want to have to deal with multiple logins & what not. So, I used one of the WordPress plugins.

Join us and if I like you enough, I might give you a blog. Yay for centralized access, too.

Also, added Google Analytics. So I can find out where you people come from. I’m thus far surprised at the variety of locations that have visited me (or the blog[s] via Google [Mostly just Ashley‘s movie reviews]).

That’s all for now.

Ions and Revelations

I’ve been considering setting up an affiliate account with Amazon and/or Newegg in order to potentially generate some income from this site but then again I’m unsure I would generate enough referrals to actually sell anything. I suppose I could write various small reviews about some of the stuff I buy since I always seem to be getting something new. But that involves reviewing it. Bleh.

Amazon does have a lot of stuff though. Absurdly large amounts of stuff. I could even refer things such as MP3 albums. I’m not sure how much of a commission I could get from doing so, much less how many of my… 2 readers would actually follow the link and purchase.

But now that I said that, them doing so would potentially lead to “click fraud” sorts of issues. Especially since they, well, have hosted blogs on my site.

Speaking of the site, I was planning on redoing it in order to fit affiliate functionality into it better. I suppose I should probably get rid of the Draeblood skin as demon draenei boobies aren’t exactly PG material. And I’d assume that’d be something they would check on. I guess I’m not entirely too certain on that, though.

I had ads once. I used Google AdWords. Nice because they were text links and basically would pull analytical data about the subject on the page then match ads to them. The downside is I often would click the links myself. Which is entirely against the terms of use. I fried myself there by doing that. =/

I recently found another site that would track people you send to shopping sites. It’d essentially follow them all the way to check out–somehow. Then they’d give you a small commission based on if they complete a purchase or not. Gaining insight into the shopping habits of people, I suppose. Again, that requires me to link stuff.

Or I could just leave the site as is. I do kind of want to redo it again but lack the motivation to start. I had drawn up a rough draft of what I thought might look good, but couldn’t really get it to feel “complete.” It felt like it was lacking something.

I had the idea of playing off an idea I had floating around. I keep making scenarios regarding a society by the name of Xion. (Matrix blah blah blah) I would essentially play on that by making the logo similar to an atom with XN in the middle. Then by learning flash skills, make the links to the pages electrons that float around the XN as if it were an ion. Then hovering over would snap them into place and allow you to click. It’s an idea, at least.

xfir Networks is now on Facebook. Yay. (Oh snap, ponies)

I’m offering hosting for blogs. If you’d like to have a blog, shoot me an email with your name, email address, what your blog would be about, and what you’d like as a username. (That determines the URL, like Ashley’s)

I’ve been meaning to update the site code and perhaps get involved in coding projects as well. But my general overabundance of laziness impedes that progress. Plus I need to be inspired.

With that, we conclude the month of August. Stay tuned, I may be posting more often on my blog until the appeal of it wears off and I find something else to distract me.. ooh shiny.

So I got bored

.. and decided to post a new blog about nothing.

Actually, I was reading some of my blogs from the past. It’s interesting to see how I’ve changed (and how I haven’t). In a way, I suppose it’s interesting to know where we came from. …and where we are going.

I recently was a Groomsman in James & Ashley Will‘s wedding. Outdoor wedding.. thankfully had some good/decent weather despite the threat of rain on that day.

Congratulations to them and I wish them a happy life together.

In terms of news for xfir Networks, I think another site redesign is in order. But then again, I’m pretty lazy so it’s doubtful I’d go that far. I had an idea to handle projects, essentially making a dynamic system to handle them so I can just post and update one file.

But then I might use blog functionality to handle that instead, so I don’t have to deal with manually editing files all the time. As I was typing that I was already thinking of how to do that, even. The style reminds me of something I did in the past, where I had a forum essentially control aspects of the main site. I make a specific forum and had the main script load the menu based on the titles of the topics in the forum. The topic subjects would have a specific format. Then the topic would get loaded if that option was picked and the post would contain a formatted posting allowing the admin to control what was displayed. I made it so we could control what each page would do, with additional options like displaying the contents of a forum post or redirecting to a different section of the site.

I at least thought it was neat. The guild I created it for fell apart, however.

I’d essentially be doing the same thing with the site but having it controlled via a blog post. It’d be set as private so it doesn’t show in the blog list.

Okay so I need to redo this site. I’ve been idle for a while so I need to start updating and redesigning things. But, I’m overcome with apathy so realistically it’s not in the foreseeable future.

However, I have been working some with C# as part of my Advanced Programming class. As a result, I made a simplistic encryption/decryption program (CryptTool). Just start it up, type a password, hit enter and start typing the text you want to encrypt.

At the moment it potentially suffers from predictability, so version 2 would aim to resolve such issues by extending the depth the crypt takes.

As far as the site goes, I sort of planned on changing the system over to the OpenID format and using a multiple user install of WordPress. I haven’t really checked into that yet, however. Likewise, I had planned to redesign the layout of the site and perhaps redo the backend (again), but that involves designing a new layout which I typically never want to bother doing.

Veni, Vidi, Defeci

So far:

4.0 GPA :: Two classes, but good start, I suppose.

No work on website. Been too preoccupied playing games on Facebook.

No work on other various projects I had planned at one point but never gotten started.

Haven’t really played World of Warcraft in a while. I wonder if my guild is wondering where I am. Oh well..

I may or may not be thinking about typing up some massive “love” related thing. I’m not sure.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day.

Site Redesign

I have some initial ideas on how to design the new site. Only issue is getting my rusty Photoshop skills back in action.

Not entirely sure what I want to do yet, but thinking I’ll do an area map type layout for the menu and perhaps implement an AJAX style setup, similar to what Facebook uses (the whole remap href links to use anchors and AJAX calls), but at the same time keep it simplistic enough to still work if javascript is disabled. You’ll see a lot of ?section/option style links. Am slightly tempted to try more Apache htaccess rewrites but think that might cause too many issues.

As far as style goes, it’ll be plain lines as usual. Not entirely decided on a color scheme as of yet, but could use some input. I like dark colors and blue. As if you can’t tell that already.

Will update later if I get any good ideas.

Projects for 2010

So in an attempt to better my life, I’ve begun to plan out projects I’d like to work on.

  1. School. I’ve enrolled in Westwood College Online for Game Software Development.
    • Since I work a night shift job, the classes being online is a great help. I can essentially spend the “dead” time at work studying and doing homework. It works out quite well, to be honest.
    • What’s nice about this field is that it also implies heavy IT work, meaning I can almost seamlessly transition between programming game engines and general IT work like C++ based applications.
  2. Site remix. I figure if I’m going to be practicing code, I might as well publish my results. In a sense, I suppose that means that I could actually *use* my website for something other than my ranting. In the end I hope I can maybe even create a full fledged project someone might use on a regular basis.
    • PHP site rewrite. Perhaps make more use of class based systems and make it more uniform in terms of what sort of coding I’m using. Make it more modular than it currently is.
    • Skin remake. Redo the skins to be more streamlined. I always seem to have issues regarding the content pages, as I end up adding additional elements I hadn’t initially planned for.
    • New sections. Obviously if I publish my work online, I would need sections for them. I do like the WordPress syndication onto front page thing I’m currently doing. Not sure if I would want to pull content from other bloggers or not.

Aside from that, the other subjects I have been ranting about lately.. well, I’ll save that for another time.

Death About

Updates suck so instead I’ll just ramble. In general, not much has changed on the site. It’s still pretty much as normal as it has been for the last 3 months or so. I could list things I should do (or want to do), but not entirely sure I could get the motivation to finish doing them (no motivation needed for.. some).

As far as WoW goes, still playing my DK on Undermine. With the addition of the new raid content, I keep somewhat busy on raid nights (25 mans on Tuesday-Thursday; 10 mans randomly thru the rest).

Still working at a local motel, night shift. Actually posting from the laptop I mentioned a while ago. I could potentially go for something higher up, but not sure.

Oh, I bought a projector. The Optoma HD20 is awesome. Bought a package deal, so got a fixed frame 92″ screen. Only issues I’m having at the moment would involve the top right corner of the screen. Left, bottom, and right sides are aligned pretty much perfectly. Top right corner bends upwards. It’s kinda odd. There’s also the issue that the included ceiling mount won’t really “fit” the projector. So I have it sitting on a table and as a result I’m sitting left of the center of the screen.

But aside from that, nothing really new..
